Should Lies be Confronted?

Considering the damage lies have done throughout history, do we have a moral duty to attempt to expose them? What if doing so puts us in harms way? And can we always be certain that something is a lie? For example, many countries (particularly Islamic ones) have anti-blasphemy laws. If we believe their religion to be a falsehood, and we know it's responsible for millions of deaths, do we have a duty to oppose it? Supposing we are wrong, and something is in fact true, even though there is severe punishment for questioning it?
