Does Christianity Lead, or Follow the Principalities?

For all the good works Christians have done throughout history, it seems the faith has a doubtful future. It has broken up into too many sects to count. People who call themselves Christians have a difficult time agreeing on basic things, including the definition of man vs woman.
During the last century, Christians slaughtered each-other by the millions in two world wars. The Great War saw the introduction of slaughter on an industrial scale: machine guns, mustard gas, trench warfare. Men's lives were casually discarded by their generals. WWII introduced the wholesale destruction of women and children via firebombing campaigns. How did these men square these things against their Christian faith? How were they able to fly over Dresden and burn thousands of babies to death, screaming in their mothers arms?
It seems to me the faith of many who profess themselves to be Christians is weak. They care more for material things: a flag, national anthem, system of government. Many of them seemed to have no problem with committing these atrocities against fellow Christians because they were of another nationality. Where is the compassion, love, and mercy Christians profess to have?
Once again Christians are slaughtering each-other, this time in the Ukraine. The Russian Orthodox Church has called this a holy war-- against other Christians.
All of these things beg the question: does Christianity lead, or follow the Principalities?
