The Socratic Method

The Socratic Method is a form of dialogue developed by Plato's teacher, the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates. Participants explore ideas by asking and answering thoughtful questions. The goal isn't to win an argument — it's to understand, refine, or even discard beliefs if they don't hold up to scrutiny.
How It Works
Anyone can be the questioner or the interlocutor — these roles can shift as the conversation evolves.
The goal is to search for the truth by examining our assumptions, not to score points or “win.” This method sharpens ideas and often leads to unexpected insights — even if no final answer is reached.
How It Works
- The interlocutor makes a statement — a belief, idea, or claim.
- Others ask clarifying questions to better understand it.
- The interlocutor responds and explains his view.
- Questioners then ask probing questions that test the logic or implications of the view.
- The speaker can:
A: Hold his ground, with more clarity or reasoning,
B: Revise his position, or
C Abandon it, if it doesn’t hold up.
