Can logic justify genocide?

I've heard various moral arguments against genocide, and got to wonder if a logical one can be made in favor. Since real world examples are filled with emotional baggage, let's look at fiction instead.

In Tolkien's Return of the King, Aragorn leads his victorious army into Mordor, putting orc cities and settlements to the sword, driving the survivors eastward. This is described as a necessary action to secure peace.

Do you think this action was reasonable?
