Is Philosophy Good?

Post by Valknor »

Philosophy as I have come to understand it is supposed to be about the pursuit of truth. What if the big metaphysical truths are beyond our comprehension? Humans rely on heuristics and other means to solve every day problems. But how do we prove or disprove something as big as the existence of God? We are still debating theism vs atheism, whether there is a prime mover, etc. What are the limits of human understanding, and are we in error to pursue that which might be unobtainable?

Furthermore I'm concerned that philosophy can lead one down the road to madness. Suppose you had unlimited time- effectively an immortal being. What would be the point to endless investigation? If you could know everything, then what? Did it help you enjoy existence? And what of all the moments that passed by during your studies that will never come again? The people, civilizations, and everything else that you didn't get to experience because you where too stuck in your head, still arguing out problems that might be unsolvable with all the computation of the universe?
To learn who rules over you, simply find out who you are not allowed to criticize.
